British Pub Names Bus Blinds

The Great British Pub has always been used as a landmark. London Transport, along with bus companies all over the UK used them on their bus blinds where a stop was nearby. Asking for directions often the response was something like: “Turn right at the Red Lion, pass the Cricketers on your left, it’s opposite the Kings Head on the corner”.

High rents and rates,  tightening of drink-driving laws, cheap supermarket booze and recession has led to the loss of thousands of pubs in recent years. Sometimes the land they sit on is worth more than the building so they get demolished to make way for something else. Victorian architects produced some superb buildings.

HYTHE RED LION SQUARE

The Manor Cottage Tavern, Finchley. I enjoyed many a meal in this pub, sadly the North Circular Road now passes over where it used to stand. The same fate awaited the Cambridge pub Edmonton, the Cooks Ferry Inn where many a top band gigged and the Crooked Billet Walthamstow. Who would have ever imagined that the notorious Cock Tavern Palmers Green would end up a supermarket?

A school pal invited me to the Cock Palmers Green, we were both under-age. A stripper was to perform that evening, the pub was jam-packed. When her performance was about to start there was a mad scramble to get up on the tables for a better view. In so doing nearly knocking a chap off-balance, when we were both established on our table I turned to apologise and he turned out to be my English Teacher. Red faces all round!

The Seven Stars Pub in Bow. Victorian splendour,  now  as flats, at least it wasn’t demolished.

The Nags Head, Holloway. Another Victorian survivor, this pub is now an amusement arcade with flats above. A far cry from it’s former glory.

You can still get a pint at the Green Man Putney!

Supplied beautifully framed if you wish.

This was a very busy pub but it’s superb position overlooking Hampstead Heath made the recent flat conversion entirely inevitable.
